Logbook entry #1: My first day in the IoT Lab
Date: Not just any day, but my birthday!
Hello world, I am Mr. Fischer - not an ordinary fisherman, but a very special kind of fisherman. My full name will remain a little secret for now, after all, we're only just getting to know each other. I am a model factory, one that has just seen the light of day in the Smart Systems Hub, or more precisely in the IoT Lab.
Birth of a robot
Today is an exciting day, because I am being assembled. My heart, the simple robot arm with a suction gripper, has been given its first task today: It is to sort red, white and blue bricks. Not an easy task, but I'm not just anyone. I use my arm to grab the bricks from a magazine independently and then transfer them to the sorting line. It feels like I'm performing magic tricks, but it's actually pure physics and a bit of technical magic.
Coordination is everything
For me, the movements in the X, Y and Z axes are like learning a dance. Each movement has to be perfectly coordinated with the next. And the suction pad? Well, it gets its power from a compressor, controlled by a valve that knows exactly when to suck in and release. A pretty clever invention, if you ask me.
The conductor of my dance moves: The PLC Next
The PLC Next is the brain behind the operation. It not only controls my arm, but also the conveyor belt of the sorting line, the pushers and processes the signals from the color sensor. This little box is really impressive and makes sure I know where to put the bricks. It's all quite a lot, I'll tell you more about it next time.
Sorting track - My dance partner
The sorting track from Fischertechnik is my faithful companion in this ballet of bricks. It guides the bricks past a color sensor that tells me which color is currently on the line. Then it's on to the storage area - a mechanical pusher pushes the bricks into the corresponding magazine. This may all sound very technical, but believe me, it's a real dance of technology.
First impressions and feelings
What a day!Between all the cables, motors and sensors, I feel like I'm in a sci-fi movie. But this is just the beginning of my journey here at the Smart Systems Hub.I can hardly wait to see what tasks and adventures await me next.Who would have thought that the life of a factory could be so exciting?
Stay tuned for more of my life here at the IoT Lab - I promise it won't be boring!🤖

Logbook entry #2: Fine-tuning and networking
Date: January 30
Hello, it's Mr. Fischer here again! Today I would like to give you a deeper insight into the core of my operation - the PLC Next. This clever little box is the central brain that controls the suction pad and sorting line to make sure everything runs smoothly.
The PLC Next not only makes it possible to set production parameters via a user-friendly configuration website, but also to start and stop the production process directly on the device. Particularly clever: the current process is always completed before a stop command is implemented. This function ensures that all processes can be completed precisely and without interruption.
One exciting development is the integration of an OPC UA interface, which can be used to both read and set control commands. This opens the door to extended automation options and even better integration into existing systems.
Until next time, when I will share more exciting updates about my development!
